Search Engine Rankings:
Be First!

Submitting Is Not Enough!

Typical scenario: You type a search term into one of the major search engines, such as Infoseek. You get back 23,177 results. How often do you look past the first 3 pages of results?

Right: never, or rarely.

If you have a website, it is crucial for your business to show up on the first 3 pages of results for each of the major search engines. Why? Search engines provide targeted, motivated traffic for your business. This is important because:

  • People who use search engines are out to find YOU. That means they're looking specifically for what you're offering, and they enter your site with an open mind. It's a lot easier to sell to someone who wants your product than to someone who doesn't.
  • Search engines can significantly increase traffic to your website - but ONLY if you are in the top few pages. You don't look further than the first few results, so why would you expect others to?
How Do The Search Engines Work?

First of all, don't worry about the thousands and thousands of search engines out there. You know how you see those submission programs or services which offer to submit your URL to over 100 (or 300, or 1000, or whatever) search engines? Well, it's not worth your time to use them.

The vast majority of your search engine traffic will come from the major search engines: Altavista, Infoseek, HotBot, Webcrawler, Lycos, and Excite. (Some of you are probably wondering, what about Yahoo! ? Yahoo! is a directory, not a search engine - but yes, you'll get a great deal of traffic from them as well) You'll want to concentrate on getting great listings from these major search engines. Don't worry about the rest.

Each search engine uses a different algorithm to determine what ranking you get. They'll generally look at one of, or any combination of:

  • Your META tags (descriptions and keywords)
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Description which directly relates to the content of your site, preferably loaded with your keywords">
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="keywords or phrases for this page. Try to keep it focused on one theme!">
  • Your title
<TITLE>Your attention-grabbing headline, preferably short and to the point. Don't forget to use your keywords!</TITLE>
  • Your headlines
  • <H1 ALIGN="CENTER">Your headline for the page - again, load it with your keyword or phrase!</H1>
  • Your keyword density, eg. how many times a certain keyword or phrase appears throughout the text of your page
  • Keywords in your ALT tags. ALT tags are the words that appear in place of an image if someone has turned their graphics off.
<IMG SRC="http://www.yourdomainname.com/imagename.gif" ALT="These are the words that would be displayed in place of your graphic!">
  • The first 200 or so words of your body text
  • Keywords in your URL.
  • How many others sites link to yours.
  • Any number of other criteria.

It takes a great deal of time, effort, and testing to be able to rank high on the search engines. It's not likely that you'll rank high on your first attempt, so you have to keep trying. It CAN be done; you just need to have the determination and the patience.

The thing is, search engines can and do change their algorithms. This means that even if you do get a good ranking on a search engine, they might go ahead and change how they evaluate your pages - and then you could end up dropping out of the top rankings altogether.

You need to constantly monitor, evaluate, and improve your performance on the search engines. It's a continuous effort to try and keep on top of the changes they make so that you can hold onto your great ranking.

How Long Can You Wait?

Altavista is probably the fastest major search engine, and will usually index your page within a few days. Others may take as long as 6 months or MORE, if they index you at all!

This can really try your patience. You don't want to spam the search engines by continuously resubmitting your pages - you could make an enemy and cause them to ban you forever. So all you can do is wait. After 4-6 weeks, if you still don't appear in the search engine, you can try submitting again. And then you wait once more.

Then what happens if you see that you don't even appear in the first three pages for your keywords? You improve your pages, and submit again. And you wait. I think you get the idea ...

Sounds like it could be an awfully long time before you get results, doesn't it? Ideally, you want get a reasonably high ranking on your first try. That way, you'll get targeted traffic visiting your site right away!
