The Truth About Classified Ads

People love to submit to free classified ad sites. And who can blame them? There's countless free sites all over the Internet, and you get some free publicity for your website out of it.

But let's be honest: how often do YOU read free classified ads?

Classified ads are effective - in certain situations. For example, submitting ads to Yahoo! can work very well. And classified ads placed in ezines or newsletters can make you a tidy profit if done properly.

People most often search for what they want by using the search engines, subscribing to newsletters, links from other sites, or through an email offer. I personally have never read through a classified ads site looking for a product, service, or biz opp. Have you?

Promoting your business by using online classified ads is often overly-hyped. There are literally thousands of sites out there where you can submit your ad, for free. But many of these are low-traffic sites or they're sites which are not well known.

I've tried it. This isn't to say that I didn't occasionally get a visitor or two from another classified site. I did - few enough to be able to count them on the fingers of one hand.

So my opinion is, spend your time on building traffic other ways. For example, advertising in ezines is an extremely effective way of dramatically increasing your profits.

How to Maximize Your Hits From Yahoo! Classifieds

First, in order to submit ads to Yahoo!, you need to have an account. If you don't have one, go to their website and create one.

Okay, the next step is to write some killer ads. Make sure you create attention-grabbing headlines and excellent, tight copy.

Now do the following:

  1. Determine which categories you'd like to submit to. You are allowed to submit up to a maximum of 10 ads.
  2. Slightly modify your ad so that it fits into the theme of each category.
  3. Submit your ads.
  4. Check Yahoo! regularly until you see your ads posted. This may be done within 24 hours, or it may take up to 3 days. Keep checking, until you find them. Why?
    Your Yahoo! ad will only be effective for a few hours - after that, other ads will push yours down further down the line (thus reducing the probability that visitors will see your ad).
  5. After your ad has been pushed down too far to be effective, go back and delete all your ads. Then repeat steps 1 through 5. Your Yahoo! ads are kept active for 30 days, but you should repeat this process so that your ads get the maximum exposure.
